Experiences

The Spain you don’t expect.

Discover Spain through its regions, seasons, landscapes and local life.

Not one country

Spain changes as you cross it.

Spain is not one experience, nor one landscape. It changes from region to region, and from season to season; in its light, its table, its traditions and the rhythm of local life.

Explore that diversity through the places, experiences and stories that make each part of Spain distinct. Consider this a field guide to the Spain we know: a starting point for discovering what might belong in a journey shaped around each traveller.

By region

Seventeen communities. One country.

The autonomous communities are the geographic frame. Move across the map. A region comes forward; the rest of Spain steps back. Discoveries from that place will gather in the margin.

The year

When to travel depends on what you want to discover.

Spain can be travelled year-round, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons.

Spring brings green landscapes, flowers and outdoor life before the summer heat. Autumn is harvest season, with wine, food and changing landscapes at their best. Winter opens a quieter side of Spain, from truffle hunting and olive harvests to mountain escapes and southern sunshine.

Summer works beautifully too, particularly in the north and in the mountains. But across much of Spain, July and August bring intense heat and peak tourism. Knowing where to go, and when, makes all the difference.

A few things are worth timing around.

Wine harvest
September — October
The exact timing varies by region and vintage, making flexibility valuable.
Olive harvest
November — January
Particularly important in Andalucía, with opportunities to visit mills and producers during the harvest.
Black truffles
November — March
Winter is the season for truffle hunting in places such as Soria and other truffle-producing areas.
Wildlife
Season varies by species.
Bear, lynx, migratory birds, flamingos, cetaceans and other wildlife each have their own seasonal windows.
Semana Santa in the South
March — April
The date moves with Easter. Across Andalucía it fills the cities, so the week itself is worth fixing early.
Skiing
December — March
Conditions depend on altitude and snow. The resorts most worth building a journey around are Baqueira-Beret in the Val d’Aran, Formigal in the Aragonese Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada, above Granada.

Unexpected Spain

There is always another Spain.

Beyond the places everyone knows, there are landscapes, traditions, people and stories that rarely make the itinerary.

This is where we look.
